A Comparison of Consumer Willingness to Pay for Four Types of Sweeteners AgEcon

As the U.S. consumption of sweeteners has increased, analysis of the demand for sweeteners has become more important. In this paper, consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for selected four types of sweeteners is evaluated. The four types of sweeteners are Kentucky grown pure maple syrup, artificially maple flavored syrup, sorghum syrup and molasses. Results suggest that consumers who are at high household income level (above $80,000) and with a smaller household size are likely to pay more for Kentucky grown maple syrup. Results show that there is no statistic difference for the annual household consumption among the four types of sweeteners.

An Institutional Framework for Meeting International Food-Safety Market Standards from a Developing-Country Perspective AgEcon

This paper examines problems being faced by agribusiness firms in developing countries in meeting the food-safety standards imposed by importing countries in their respective markets. Based on existing institutional frameworks in developing countries such as India, it is suggested that in order to meet the prescribed standards in international markets there is a need to establish inter-linkages across different institutions not only within developing countries but also with respected international standard-setting organizations for better and smoother implementation of WTO measures related to international food-safety market standards.

Buyer and Seller Response to an Adverse Food Safety Event: The Case of Frozen Salmon in Alberta AgEcon

Fish is a low-fat protein source high in omega-3 fatty acids, but in 2004 consumers also heard that farmed salmon had high levels of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). This research evaluated how Canadian consumers and processors reacted to the conflicting health messages. Demand estimates and time-series analysis of 2001-2006 frozen meat scanner data in Alberta, Canada show a significant drop in salmon expenditure share following the PCB finding. The industry responded by launching low-priced wild salmon products, which contributed to significant demand expansion. The analysis illustrates how a food safety threat was averted and even served as a catalyst for growth.

Comparison of Decision Rules for Subsurface Drip Irrigation Practices Using a Nonlinear Mathematical Programming Model AgEcon

A comparison of decision rules has been made for case studies of corn production using subsurface drip irrigation under three agricultural management practices (no irrigation, uniform irrigation, and variable rate irrigation). The uniform irrigation strategy appeared to perform the best than the other two management practices under different risk scenarios.

Consumer Reaction to Beef Safety Scares AgEcon

This study examines the impact of two beef safety scares on retail-level meat per capita consumption and prices in Japan. The objective is to investigate the Japanese consumer reactions to the news of FMD and BSE discoveries, as reflected in the quantity and price changes in the immediate neighborhood of each event. Better understanding of consumer reactions to beef safety scares helps the beef industry restore consumer confidence after food safety crises and provides opportunities for national-level product differentiation based on beef quality and traceability.

Consumer Response to and Trust of Information about Food-Safety Events in the Chicken and Beef Markets in Kentucky AgEcon

Recently there have been many highly publicized food-safety events affecting marketing and policy channels of agricultural products. This research examines the impact of food-safety events on consumers’ behavior and trust of information in the chicken and beef markets using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) developed by Ajzen (1991). Of particular interest is to determine whom consumers trust regarding information concerning food-safety events. These results are compared to those of an EU study on perceived risks of chicken consumption to see if generalizations can be made across different countries, regions, products, and consumers.

The aim was to more accurately depicting the optimal location for an agribusiness firm providing precision agriculture technologies in the state of Kentucky. Demand for quality-differentiated beef in Japan AgEcon

In this article, we apply a model of vertical product differentiation to the Japanese beef market. We theoretically derive a system of consumer demand functions for quality-differentiated beef in Japan. We choose a particular utility function which is nonlinear in the consumption of the quality-differentiated product and linear in the consumption of all other goods. We employ a seemingly unrelated econometric model to estimate Japanese consumer demand functions for four beef types from the four origins. The empirical results show Japanese consumers prefer domestically produced beef to imported US and Australian. We also find seventeen substitution and two complementary effects among the various origins.

Dynamics of Price Transmission in the Presence of a Major Food Safety Shock: Impact of H5N1 Avian Influenza on the Turkish Poultry Sector AgEcon

This article addresses the dynamic impact of the 2005 H5N1 avian influenza outbreak on the Turkish poultry sector. Contemporary time-series analyses with historical decomposition graphs are used to address differences in monthly price adjustments between market levels along the Turkish poultry supply channel. The empirical results show that price adjustments are asymmetric with respect to both speed and magnitude along the marketing channel. Results also reveal a differential impact of the exogenous shock on producers and retailers. The findings have critical efficiency and equity implications for the supply-chain participants.

Export Demand Function Estimation for U.S. Raisins AgEcon

Raisins are one of important products of California. Almost all U.S. raisins are produced near Fresno California’s central valley due to its hot growing season and abundant water supply. U.S. is the leading exporter of raisins in the world. This paper investigates the export demand function of U.S. raisins for the top five importer countries. The relationship of quantity exported with export price, other exporters’ prices, real income, and exchange rate is estimated. The model used is a logarithmic panel data model for the 1992-2008 periods. The model used is in log-log format to determine own- price, cross price, and income elasticities for the commodity.

Internet marketing has gained attention as a new medium to advertise food products to children. This study examines the prevalence of food marketing during children's television programs that are available on the internet. While food is the largest product category advertised, commercials make up a smaller portion of episode time online compared to previous reports of television advertising.

HOW DOES HACCP CHANGE U.S. SEAFOOD EXPORTS?-ANALYSIS WITH FISHES, MOLLUSCA, AND SHELLFISH OTHER THAN MOLLUSCA AgEcon

Although the effect of HACCP on international trade is an issue with many concerns recently, only a few empirical studies focus on the impact of HACCP on U.S seafood export industry. Using the approach of Gravity Model with adjustment of unobserved country characteristics, this paper contributes to analyze the differential effects of HACCP implementation on three kinds of seafood: fishes, mollusca, and shellfish other than mollusca. The results indicate that HACCP application has negative but insignificant effect on seafood exports in the short run. In the long run, HACCP only negatively and significantly affect seafood exports of mollusca and shellfish. Integrating Marginal Cost into Pricing-to-market Models for U.S. Agricultural Products AgEcon

This article investigates the markup pricing behaviour of U.S. exporters of agricultural products. Agricultural products studied are feed, flour, frozen potatoes, frozen orange juice, five categories of beef, five categories of pork, and two categories of chicken. The popular pricing-to-market (PTM) approach of Krugman (1987) is used to examine market power and imperfect competition for the markets under study. International Pork Trade and Foot-and-Mouth Disease AgEcon

International pork trade has not only been influenced by trade agreements but also altered by consumer perceptions on disease-infected animals. This study uses a gravity model with fixed-effects to investigate how pork trade is affected by foot-and-mouth disease among 186 countries. Results confirm that pork export falls when an exporting country develops FMD. Exporters with a vaccination policy have larger negative impacts than those with a slaughter policy. Further, pork importers that develop FMD and institute a slaughter policy will import more pork, but importers with a vaccination policy import the same level of pork. In order to retain a position as a top pork exporter, a slaughter policy is often a better choice than a vaccination policy.

MEASURING THE DEGREE OF MARKET POWER AMONG BEEF EXPORTERS TO JAPAN AgEcon

A residual-demand model for beef exporters to Japan is specified to estimate market power. The analysis is disaggregated by beef cut and form. The results indicate U.S. frozen-ribs category enjoys the highest markup of price over marginal cost, while Australia and New Zealand have some market power, which includes five chilled-beef categories.
